Introduction

This page, and others linked from it, will be a place for me to describe some of the fun I have designing and building speakers.

The first question has to be why? Actually I can't answer that. It has been something that I have wanted to do for years. The satisfaction of crafting an object that works can bring its own satisfaction.

Initially, I will just keep this on one page, but I will probably split it out to multiple pages if it expands too much.

First Steps

At first I started looking at building a subwoofer. This would be to compliment the small bookshelf Mission speakers that I have at the moment. Although probably nearly twenty years old, I have been very happy with them. Now it is time for more!

Once I complete the sub, then I would like to replace the Mission speakers with a pair of home built speakers.

A second reason for wanting to have a play with speakers is to have some fun experimenting. It is easy to get caught up with the enthusiastic descriptions of how a certain configuration sounds, but without spending a fortune on all the different exotic contraptions available, how will I know what I like? I need to build something!

Instead of spending a lot of money on a large quality speaker for a subwoofer straight away, it was decided to buy a number of small speakers. An order for sixteen 100mm drivers has been placed with a seller on Ebay. Until these drivers arrive, some thoughts as to what to do with them have crossed my mind. A simple list of ideas goes somthing like as follows

  • Sealed
  • Bass Reflex
  • 4th Order Band Pass
  • Transmission Line
  • Horn Loaded
  • 3D Spiral Horn

Initially it would be worth making up a couple of sealed boxes. These should work well and be easy to construct. Using full range drivers, these would make good PC speakers. Following those, it would be nice to try and build a small subwoofer. My gut feeling is that a 4th order band pass design would be suitable with two drivers in an isobaric configuration.
